What activities will we be undertaking?
- The most useful preparation at school is to consider how we should behave on a farm and in the countryside i.e. the essence of the Country Code.
- How about getting the children to come up with their own ideas for a code of behaviour?
- After putting on appropriate clothing and footwear our first session will be in the classroom. We will consider how we should behave for the day on a farm and in the countryside with respect for Mr Charles, his family and the animals.
- One of our outdoor activities will be to feed the hens and collect the eggs. If you want to save a little time you can choose children for the following special jobs, or we can organise them on the day:
- 2 children to carry water buckets 2 careful children to carry the egg baskets
- 2 children to carry the corn buckets and give it out to the rest of the class
- 2 children to scoop out the mash
- 2 children to carry the grit (for the chicken’s digestion)
- All the children will have a chance to feed and touch the hens and sheep during the morning and in the afternoon we spend time with the dairy cattle and calves, and any livestock around the farmyard.
- We will also observe the pigs in the morning session.
- Please remember that farms are a potentially dangerous and hazardous working environment. Children must stay with the adults at all times and must not touch any equipment or machinery around the farmyard.
- The outline of the day remains flexible according to your specific requirements – we can always adapt if the weather alters, or we feel that the children need a change!
